IMPLANT-SUPPORTED DENTURES AND HOW THEY WORK

Dental implants are small titanium posts that are placed in the jawbone to act as a replacement for the natural roots of missing teeth. Once the implant is placed, a small connector piece, called an abutment, is placed on top of the implant. Once the implant has healed and the abutment is in place, a denture or bridge can be attached to the abutment, providing a stable and durable replacement for missing teeth.

Who is a Candidate for Implant-Supported Dentures?

Most people who have lost all or most of their teeth due to injury, disease, or decay are good candidates for implant-supported dentures. You must have healthy gums and sufficient bone density to support the implant. You should also maintain good overall health and maintain good oral hygiene.

BENEFITS OF IMPLANT-SUPPORTED DENTURES

There are many benefits to implant-supported dentures, including:

How are Implant-Supported Dentures Placed?

We usually perform the implant placement procedure using local anesthesia in our office. We make a small incision in the gum tissue and place the implant in the bone. The incision is then closed with sutures and allowed to heal.

What to Expect After Implant-Supported Denture Placement

You may experience some swelling after implant placement. These side effects should resolve within a few days. You may also have some mild discomfort and soreness, but you can treat that with over-the-counter pain medication.

Keeping the implant site clean and free of plaque and bacteria is essential. Be sure to brush and floss carefully around the implant and abutment. You should also see our team regularly for checkups and cleanings.

Caring for Your Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures require similar care as regular dentures. Be sure to brush them daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and nonabrasive denture cleanser. And during your checkups with us, we can check the fit of your dentures and make any necessary adjustments.
